KPMG East Africa is recruiting an Executive Director on behalf of a leading not-for-profit organization operating in Tanzania’s health sector.
The Executive Director will provide overall strategic and institutional leadership, guiding the organization through its next phase of growth, sustainability, innovation, and public-health impact. The role carries responsibility for strategy, financial sustainability, fundraising, research and innovation, organizational performance, partnerships, governance, and workforce leadership.
The successful candidate will also represent the organization nationally, regionally, and internationally and strengthen its position as a leading provider of health-program implementation, technical assistance, research, policy advocacy, knowledge generation, and capacity building.
Responsibilities

Provide strategic and visionary leadership for implementation of the organization’s Strategic Plan.

Ensure organizational priorities align with national and global health priorities.

Translate Board decisions into operational plans, strategies, and measurable performance outcomes.

Drive institutional growth, technical excellence, innovation, policy influence, and organizational transformation.

Provide executive oversight of financial performance, resource allocation, sustainability, and long-term organizational viability.

Maintain strong financial accountability, transparency, internal controls, risk management, and business continuity.

Ensure quality financial information is available to Executive Management and the Board.

Develop and maintain a diversified and sustainable funding portfolio.

Identify and pursue grants, contracts, investments, endowments, and innovative financing opportunities.

Lead fundraising and resource-mobilization initiatives.
-
Build strategic partnerships with government, donors, development partners, philanthropic institutions, funding agencies, and the private sector.

Oversee development of funding proposals, investment cases, and strategic partnership frameworks.

Reduce funding-concentration risks through revenue and partnership diversification.

Provide strategic oversight of research and innovation programmes.

Ensure research activities deliver relevant and measurable public-health impact.

Drive digital transformation, technology adoption, research commercialization, and institutional modernization.

Lead and develop the Senior Management Team.

Build a capable, inclusive, accountable, and high-performing workforce.

Champion leadership development, succession planning, employee wellbeing, and merit-based systems.

Ensure compliance with governance frameworks, statutory obligations, policies, and standard operating procedures.

Maintain high standards of organizational integrity and accountability.

Represent the organization to the Government of Tanzania, donors, development partners, research institutions, academic institutions, and other stakeholders.

Strengthen the organization's position as a trusted health-sector policy advisor and technical partner.
Requirements

Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Medicine, Life Sciences, Health Economics, or a related discipline.

A PhD is an added advantage.

At least 15 years of progressively responsible leadership experience.

At least 5 years of executive-level leadership experience.

Experience leading complex organizations such as large health programmes, health-related NGOs, academic institutions, or health research organizations.

Strong understanding of Tanzania’s health system.

Experience working with multilateral donors and international development partners.

Demonstrated experience in organizational governance.

Strong financial oversight and financial-stewardship capabilities.

Proven fundraising and resource-mobilization experience.
