Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is seeking a Laboratory Manager to oversee laboratory operations within its project area in Lindi. The role is responsible for planning, coordinating and monitoring laboratory activities, ensuring quality standards, managing laboratory teams, maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring compliance with MSF and Ministry of Health laboratory protocols.

The position plays a key role in supporting accurate diagnosis and treatment by ensuring reliable laboratory services, quality control, safety procedures and timely reporting of laboratory data.

Responsibilities

Define, implement and monitor laboratory activities within the project area according to MSF protocols.
Participate in planning laboratory activities and associated budgets.
Support medical diagnosis and treatment through effective laboratory services.
Supervise laboratory activities within supported health facilities.
Perform and monitor quality-control tests and laboratory analyses.
Ensure laboratory tests are performed correctly according to medical prescriptions and standards.
Supervise testing activities including, Serology, Hematology, Biochemistry, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Compatibility testing
Ensure implementation of laboratory hygiene, biosafety and infection-prevention procedures.
Ensure staff use appropriate protective equipment and follow universal precautions.
Ensure cleaning personnel understand laboratory biohazard risks.
Maintain accurate laboratory registration systems and activity records.
Ensure correct use of laboratory management tools, including EpyTryp.
Prepare and submit laboratory slides and samples for external quality control.
Maintain confidentiality of patient laboratory results.
Supervise the correct use and availability of laboratory medical equipment.
Coordinate calibration and maintenance of automated laboratory instruments.
Maintain accurate inventories of laboratory equipment, materials and supplies.
Forecast laboratory material and equipment requirements.
Support recruitment, training, performance evaluation and development of laboratory staff.
Ensure adequate staffing levels and technical capacity within the laboratory team.
Compile, analyse and report laboratory activities and results.
Provide reports on testing volumes, complications, operational challenges and laboratory issues.
Support epidemiological reporting related to MSF health activities.
Coordinate laboratory activities with Ministry of Health laboratory teams.
Act as the communication focal point between MSF and Ministry of Health laboratory stakeholders.
Monitor laboratory cold-chain management.
Ensure implementation of MSF minimum laboratory standards at supported health facilities.
Monitor performance, maintenance and quality control of point-of-care instruments and rapid diagnostic tests.
Ensure laboratory documentation complies with MSF and Ministry of Health requirements.
Provide technical support aligned with ISO 15189 laboratory quality-management standards.
Monitor reagent consumption according to MSF and Ministry of Health procedures.
Ensure complete, accurate and timely reporting of laboratory data.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Microbiology or a related biomedical laboratory discipline.
Valid registration and practising licence from the relevant professional regulatory body.
At least 2 years of experience working as a laboratory technician.
Training or specialization in tropical diseases or other laboratory fields is desirable.
Previous MSF or NGO experience is an advantage.
Experience working in developing-country healthcare environments is an advantage.
Good written and spoken English.
Good written and spoken Kiswahili.
Computer literacy, including, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet applications
Strong people-management and staff-development abilities.

Strong focus on quality and results.
Ability to work effectively in a team.
