Safety and Emergency Response Officer

Shanta Mining Company Limited is seeking a qualified and experienced Safety and Emergency Response Officer to support safe operations in Songwe.

The successful candidate will manage workplace safety, enforce safety procedures, identify hazards and respond effectively to emergencies. The role covers surface and underground mining environments and requires the ability to protect employees, visitors, property and operations during critical situations.

Responsibilities

• Promote a strong workplace safety culture through training, inspections and enforcement of safety procedures.
• Identify workplace hazards and conduct risk assessments.
• Ensure employees follow safe operating procedures and company safety policies.
• Ensure compliance with applicable legal and regulatory safety requirements.
• Investigate accidents and near-miss incidents.
• Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
• Maintain accurate safety incident records and reports.
• Develop and maintain emergency management plans and response procedures.
• Prepare and maintain emergency response duty cards.
• Ensure emergency equipment and resources are properly maintained and ready for use.
• Plan and conduct evacuation drills and emergency exercises.
• Participate in post-exercise and incident debriefings.
• Lead and coordinate emergency response activities during incidents.
• Protect employees, visitors and company property during emergencies.

Requirements

• Secondary Level Education – Form IV or Form VI.
• Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment.
• Certificate III in Mine Rescue.
• NOSCH 1 & NOSCH 2.
• Level 3 First Aid and CPR certification.
• Relevant fire safety and emergency response training/certifications.
• Minimum 3 years of experience as a Safety & Emergency Response Officer (S & ERO) in mining or a related industry.
• Strong knowledge of safety and emergency-response management systems.
• Good knowledge of risk assessment and incident management.
• Good written and spoken English and Swahili.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Experience operating Light Vehicles, Fast Attack vehicles and Fire Tenders.
• Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
• Good communication skills.
• Physically fit and capable of responding quickly during emergencies.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to perform manual duties to a high standard.
