Workshop Artisan

Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL PLC) is looking for a Workshop Artisan to perform mechanical maintenance, inspection, repair, fabrication, and installation activities on plant equipment and machinery. The role focuses on maximizing equipment reliability, plant availability, operational efficiency, and product quality while maintaining high safety standards across Brewing, Packaging, and Utilities operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective mechanical maintenance according to approved schedules and procedures.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and equipment failures, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
• Dismantle, inspect, repair, refurbish, assemble, and commission mechanical equipment and components.
• Maintain and repair pumps, motors, gearboxes, compressors, blowers, conveyors, valves, and related equipment.
• Replace and align shafts, bearings, couplings, pulleys, belts, and other mechanical components.
• Support equipment installation, commissioning, leveling, alignment, and operational start-up.
• Perform machining, fitting, fabrication, welding, grinding, drilling, and cutting activities.
• Safely operate workshop equipment including lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, welding equipment, grinders, hydraulic tools, and measuring instruments.
• Fabricate and modify equipment components to support maintenance and operational requirements.
• Maintain workshop equipment in safe and effective working condition.
• Conduct routine equipment inspections to identify wear, defects, misalignment, vibration, leaks, and other reliability issues.
• Recommend repair, refurbishment, or replacement of components to prevent equipment failure.
• Participate in equipment reliability and maintenance optimization initiatives.
• Support root cause failure analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, equipment history, and technical documentation.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, equipment manuals, P&IDs, maintenance procedures, and technical specifications.
• Ensure maintenance work complies with engineering standards, manufacturer requirements, and company procedures.
• Contribute to maintenance planning and reporting.
• Comply with occupational health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
• Follow permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out, and PPE requirements.
• Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions.
• Maintain good housekeeping and apply 5S principles in workshops and plant areas.
• Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Brewing, Packaging, and Utilities teams.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving equipment reliability, reducing maintenance costs, and increasing plant efficiency.
• Participate in problem-solving activities and provide technical input for improvement projects.
• Perform other mechanical maintenance duties assigned by the supervisor or engineering management.

Requirements

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in industrial mechanical maintenance, workshop operations, or plant engineering.
• Practical experience in mechanical fitting, alignment, fabrication, welding, machining, and rotating equipment maintenance.
• Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and P&IDs.
• Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices.
• Experience in root cause analysis and mechanical fault diagnosis.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain workshop equipment.
• Basic computer literacy, including maintenance reporting and record management.
• Strong safety awareness and compliance.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Good attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Accountability, adaptability, and results orientation.
• Continuous improvement mindset.
• Trade certification in Mechanical Fitting, Fitter & Turner, Machining, Welding, Fabrication, or a related discipline is an added advantage.
• Occupational Health and Safety certification or training is an added advantage.
• Experience in manufacturing, food and beverage, brewing, packaging, utilities, FMCG, mining, or process industries is an added advantage.
• Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is an added advantage.
