Zanzibar University is seeking a Laboratory Technician to provide technical support in the teaching and research laboratories within the Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences at the University Main Campus in Tunguu, Zanzibar. The role involves preparing laboratory materials, supporting practical sessions and research activities, maintaining equipment, managing laboratory supplies, and ensuring laboratory safety and quality standards are followed.
Responsibilities

Provide day-to-day technical support in teaching and research laboratories.

Prepare laboratory reagents, specimens, media, and equipment before practical sessions and demonstrations.

Assist academic staff during laboratory practical classes.

Support students during practical sessions and laboratory-based research activities.

Operate laboratory instruments and equipment.
-
Calibrate and perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
-
Maintain accurate laboratory records.
-
Monitor and maintain inventories of laboratory consumables.
-
Monitor reagent stock levels and ensure necessary materials are available.
-
Ensure laboratory safety procedures are followed.
-
Enforce biosafety requirements and appropriate specimen-handling procedures.

Ensure proper laboratory waste disposal.
-
Support implementation of laboratory quality assurance procedures.
Requirements

Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology.

Minimum CGPA of 3.5.
-
Sound working knowledge of standard laboratory techniques.

Knowledge of reagent preparation.

Knowledge of specimen handling procedures.

Familiarity with laboratory safety and biosafety standards.

Understanding of laboratory quality assurance standards.

Ability to operate routine laboratory instruments and equipment.

Ability to carry out routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Good record-keeping and organisational skills.

Good communication skills.
